The Fast Train to Babytown

The news has been released and perhaps you already heard that we had our second little baby girl! She surprised and confounded us by arriving over a week late, but it looks like her time in the womb may be the last bit of slow-poke we ever see from her. A dead-ringer for her sister with almost identical newborn stats and impossibly cute furrowed brow, Luca Joy blasted into our world Friday, January 28th at 5:01pm.

As you’ll see, everything happened quite fast this time around. Here’s the quick play-by-play:

Part 1: Funny Feelings

6:15am – Jeremy leaves the house early for a morning coffee appointment that turns into a no show.

8:16am – Joy instant messages Jeremy at work to say, “No big deal, but just so you know, today is a little different. I feel uncomfortable.”

11:11am – Joy calls Jeremy from Costco to mention that she has noticed some light contractions that are about 20 minutes apart. Jeremy can hear Lynnea talking to passers-by in the background.

12:36pm – Jeremy leaves the office to meet Joy for a routine non-stress test at Eastside Maternal Fetal Medicine, telling co-workers as he leaves that he’ll be back in an hour and half.

Part 2: The Non-Stress Test

Getting Luca's Heart Rate

Getting Luca's Heart Rate

1:09pm – Jeremy makes his way through the parking maze to find Joy hooked up to a fetal monitor. The nurse is starting to get a clear reading on both Luca’s heart rate and Joy’s contractions.

1:47pm – After noticing the frequency of Joy’s “light” contractions, Jeremy asks the nurse how far apart they are according to the readout. She looks at the paperwork and says, “About 4 to 5 minutes apart and 60 seconds in duration.”

1:48pm – Jeremy tries to convince Joy that she is—in fact—in labor, and that he will not be going back to work.

2:14pm – The nurse explains that Luca’s heart rate has been decelerating to below 60 beats per minute with about half of the contractions. This is no good.

2:51pm – The nurse, midwife, and doctor at Overlake Hospital all get up to speed and agree that the best course of action at this time is to get mom and baby over to the nearest hospital facility so they can monitor Luca’s heart rate throughout the now imminent delivery.

Part 3: The Hospital

3:18pm – We pull into the Overlake parking garage.

3:56pm – After an unnaturally long check in process, we are taken to a room and hooked up to a fetal monitor.

4:31pm – The doctor introduces himself and promptly measures a very serious Joy at over 9 centimeters.

Calming Down

Calming Down

4:53pm – Joy starts feeling like pushing, but one important thing has yet to occur. So the doctor breaks her bag of water and the team of strangers in the room gawk while she exclaims, “That felt awesome!”

4:56pm – The doctor, the midwife and the doula agree that Luca’s heart rate is hovering at a scarily low rate and inform Joy that she’ll have to push the baby out without a contraction.

5:01pm – After a couple of intense pushes a beautiful, screaming Luca Joy enters the world!

That Pregnancy Glow

I just came across a pregnancy journal entry from February of 2009. While I’m a few weeks behind where I was when I wrote it, I resonate with the sentiment 100 percent at this point. I laughed. I cried…. Well, here, you can see for yourself:

Not Entirely Amused at This Pregnancy Thing

Not Entirely Amused at This Pregnancy Thing

*****

2/6/09

I’m 32 weeks pregnant. You look back and give yourself all kinds of slack; of credit. You laugh it off or say, “wow, that sucked.” But when “that” is the emotional and physical “now,” it seems pretty insurmountable. It’s like being stuck on a perpetual trampoline–with a broken foot and the stomach flu. It’s achy and swollen and fat and drab and tired and decrepit and pimply and flabby and sluggish and slow and uncertain and teary and tense and all together too much.

I think this is what they refer to when they say that pregnant moms get to a point where they say, “enough! I want my body back.” I always thought they just missed their cute, feminine curves (and they do). But they mean much more than that!

I mean I want my muscles, my clear skin, my unswollen feet, boundless energy, sexy legs, cute clothes, unrestricted diet, controllable hunger, and pain-free life. I want (I feel like I need) my emotional stability too. Is this hormones? Probably. But then, if you went from healthy, happy, well-adjusted woman to grunting, whining, pain-ridden, confused blob in seven months, you’d be pretty upset too, no matter your emotional competence.

*****

So there it is: proof that (no matter what I claim) I did forget the pain of childbearing once it ended. Otherwise, there’s no way I’d attempt it again.

Well, here’s to baby #2 being really, super, totally, utterly AWESOME. Or at least healthy, happy and well adjusted. I mean, there’s no reason at least one of us can’t have that old glow.

Ultrasound Baby Pictures of Kid #2 (Girl)

So Ylia took another set of pictures of our newest baby inside Joy’s belly. I’m going to save you all the monotony of 42 baby ultrasound pictures and just show you (again) my top 4.

Picture #1 – The Hello, How are You?

In this picture you can see she’s trying to make contact.  Or maybe she’s coming at Ylia with a fist?

Picture #2 – She’s got Legs

I believe these are her legs, but this is only a guess.  I can’t think of anything else it would be.

Picture #3 – Spine-tingling

Here’s a nice baby ultrasound picture of her spine. What a great curve she’s got.

Kid #2 is a Girl!

Yep, my friends, we are having another baby – and that other baby is a girl.  We will be a family of three females and one male.  I am outnumbered.

For the last three weeks I have been coming to terms with the thought of becoming a father of another little girl.  I’ve looked in to memberships at the NRA ($35/year), tried to decide if I’m pro-barbie or pro-Hello Kitty, and invested in some sweet pink camo.

Possible Rendition of Future Mini-Hutton #2

Possible Rendition of Future Mini-Hutton #2

Ylia did the ultrasound again with that amazing gadget and it went without a hitch.  Stay tuned and we’ll be posting some official first-pics of Mini-Hutton numero dos soon! Currently we are at 25 weeks and due mid- to late-January.  Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Side note: La Prega is hanging in there.  This time around the sciatic pain has been intense and started around week one – seriously, I think it was the first sign we had we were pregnant this time around.

Cannon Beach 2010

We’re taken a small break from city life and are down in Cannon Beach, Oregon with a few of our close friends -the Whitmores and the Ayes.

The beach is phenomenal and were so close, you can see Haystack Rock from the living room window. Amazing.
