Who does she take after?

Hello Friends.  We’ve had Lynnea around for quite some time now (8 days to be exact) and we’d like to know one question from all of you.  Who does Lynnea look more like?  We’ve provided you with three birth photos to help make this tough decision.  So far the in-person results seem pretty mixed, so we’re taking an official poll on the site!

Vote to the right when you’re ready!  And don’t worry, more photos are on their way.

The Road to Babyville

So most of you have already heard that Joy and I had our very first little baby Monday night!  Yeah, she’s amazing – pretty cute and been fairly chill so far (keeping fingers crossed).

Now that things have settled down we’ve been getting tons and tons of questions about how the birth went.  Since there are only so many hours in the day, we’re going to give you all the details behind the Twitter play-by-play of the labor everyone was following Monday.

Part 1: Waking Labor

3:20am* – First contractions wake Joy and continue every 8 minutes.

4:25am – Joy wakes Jeremy with a smile, “Honey, guess what? I think we’re in labor!”

5:33am - Jeremy gets some pre-labor video before the going gets tough (stay tuned).  Then we doze to save our energy for the long day ahead.

8:28am – Out of bed, we start actively tracking contractions.  We get some breakfast, call our doula and midwife to get some information about next steps, then give the new grandparents a call to let them know that it looks like today is the day.

10:02am – Meet with the doula and she recommends that we get some fresh air and go on one last ‘date’ before the little on arrives.

11:38am – We share a glass of wine with Joy’s parents who are eager to meet their first grand-daughter.

12:13pm – We begin our last official date before the little one joins us!

Part 2: Tully’s

The Scene of our First Date.

12:21pm – We drive over to the sight of our very first date (way back on high school), Tully’s in Bridle Trails, for a buy-one-get-one-free late (my wife, the coupon maven).  Luckily it fared pretty well over the years and is still standing.  Cheesy, yes.  But a damn good move!

Part 3: Seeing some of our Family

12:36pm – Our next stop is pretty important.  We take a jaunt over to my dad’s place and Joy’s mom’s to let them know that today is the day they are going to have a new grand-daughter.  We thought it best to tell them in person.

I think they’re pretty stoked.

Part 4: Lunch at Spazzo’s

2:08pm - By now I’m getting hungry (and Joy knows she’d better eat).  We stop off at one of our favorite places to grab a nice meal.  The host gives us a funny look when we ask for “larger table by the bathroom” but he agrees and before too long I spread out a large sheet titled “Contraction List” on the table. I’m filling it in as the waitress walks up to a closed-eyed Joy to take our drink orders. She seems a little more concerned than the host, but takes our picture anyway.

Pasta Anyone?

Pasta Anyone? (You can see the Contraction Chart)

We both order spaghetti and meatballs (no cheese on Joy’s) then Joy looks up and said, “I don’t think I can be out in public any longer.”  (The time has come–cue 2nd stage of labor.)

Part 5: Back Home – More Labor

3:00pm - Headed back home.  If you haven’t guessed by now, we’re doing a natural birth – husband coached via the Bradley Method (be careful, the website’s an eye sore).  Things are getting more serious and, feeling the night might go long, we head up to bed for a quick ‘nap’ (4:14pm).  We talk to the doula, who comes over shortly after (5:26pm) and to start coaching Joy through some of the more intense contractions.

… 3 hours pass where Jeremy gets a little more food to eat, Joy continues moving around to get the baby “just right” and keeps fairly relaxed conversation between contractions, which proves to mislead me and the doula as to the lateness of the hour…

7:39pm – Nausea sets in and her water breaks.  Suddenly, the urge to push takes over and things get really serious. In seconds we’re on the phone with the midwife and heading out.

Part 6: The Birth Center

On the way over, Joy has only three contractions.  God’s hand is over us for sure, as they come lighter and with significantly less intensity than the previous ones.

8:14pm – The midwife and two interns meet us at the center, bustling to get things ready to go.  (This is the point where Jeremy’s cell phone battery starts giving warnings.)

Between Active Pushes

Between Active Pushes

To say that Joy only had four pushes at the birth center is an understatement.  Although, “technically” there were four (maybe five) it wasn’t a 1-2-3-4 you’re done kinda thing.  Unlike the contractions that happened throughout the day and were 4-8 minutes apart and 90 seconds long, her pushing was more like 10 minutes apart and longer in duration.

8:54pm – Joy gives the last push that brings Lynnea Jo into our oxygen-filled world.  The baby is a light purple bluish color with lots of sticky white stuff around her.  And blood. There is definitely blood (the midwife assures us nothing is out of the ordinary).

Jeremy reaches down with one hand (the other hand is held like the dickens by his laboring wife) and catches baby one-handed and slides her onto mom’s tummy.  This move was truly amazing and this blog post doesn’t do it justice.  Dad was a rockstar!  :)

9:49pm - They are one happy family.

38.5 Week Update

Okay, so no one ever committed to updating this blog every week.  We’re not machines.  In fact, we are very much human and have be working our human tails off preparing for our first baby girl!  (Note: That link will change once we actually have some photos of her in real life.)

We’ve been busy geting her a fun new rocking chair (thanks Judee & Madison) & bookshelf for Lynnea!

Kid #1 Furniture in Nursery

Hello Everyone.  Joy and I were finally able to pick up some baby furniture (crib and dresser) for the little one this past weekend and get the nursery setup.

Since things have been crazy busy with Bradley classes and a huge curriculum of baby books to read, I thought I’d paste some photos of her bedroom for all of you to see.

Special thanks goes out to Jon for his noble effort helping me unload the dresser last minute!  He’s a rockstar and so is his new wife, Chrystal.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters!

So, we fully intended on wearing these sweaters out to a few good Christmas parties this year, but with Seattle’s “Arctic Blast 2008” we’ve been snowbound watching old 80′s flicks on our Media Center and putting together old scrapbooks from Semester at Sea (one day I’ll have to publish my old site from the trip).  Enjoy!

Snow Angels – Seattle Arctic Blast 2008

So, it’s been a little crazy here at the Hutton house!  Joy’s been sick this week, then with the snow storm we both got a little stranded here in Redmond.

Wednesday: We’re stoked for snow … but where is it?!

Thursday: There sure was a lot of  snow last night!  (See snow angel video below.)

Friday: More snow?!  Ugh.

Saturday: We gotta get outta here!  There’s gonna be another storm tonight.

As you can see, with about a foot of snow, we got hit pretty hard. Now that the two of us have gotten a little bit of cabin fever during “Arctic Blast 2008″ we decided to make a break for it outside and make some fantastic snow angels!

I of course had to grab the new camera to capture it.  Note my blood curdling scream.  It is, in fact real. :)

Snow Day

What happened to the snow!? I rushed home from my impromptu dentist appointment (don’t ask) to beat the storm and, low-and-behold, what hit my windshield? Rain. dust-like sprinkles at first and then, as sure as day, rain drops. Big, gross, dreary, normal rain drops.

Jeremy and I are taking a snow day. It’s work from home to stave away the certain death that comes when we try to navigate Edmund (trusty but skittish Corolla) up Education Hill in even one inch of pure white, flaky heaven. We had certain plans to romp and play (during regularly spaced, state-mandated work breaks of course)–even build a snowman! But here we are, typing away on our prospective laptops (teeth intact), and I swear the very last modicum of snow from two days ago is about to slip into oblivion with the rising heat.

The only good I see in the midst of it all is that our gingerbread house did indeed receive the healthy blizzard it was expecting.

It snowed on our gingerbread house!

It snowed on our gingerbread house!

This g-house's days are numbered....

Christmas Shopping 2008

Well, we survived Christmas Shopping 2008!  Instead of going to the outlet mall in Quil Ceda like usual, we instead found ourselves wandering around the Alderwood Mall getting all of our shopping done from a handful of places.  Crazy.

We’re also getting ready for Christmas by decorating and wrapping up our Christmas letter.  So for all of you looking for some of our Christmas Home Pictures, check these out:

Thanksgiving 2008

Joy and I went to Palm Springs this year for Thanksgiving.  Every other year we spend the holidays with my family and then with hers.  Her family gets together down in beautiful California, where the sun is shining, and meets up at her dad’s place.

This year we almost ran into a little problem.  There was a foreseeable “storm” heading to Palm Springs which loomed about for the most part of the week.  Luckily, Joy and “Kid #1” got plenty of sun.  I wonder of she’ll be just like her mom…

Overall Thanksgiving was great!  We got see to hang out with Tyler and Lani, playing “Shark Attack” in the pool while Ben and Angie took to a little golf.

We also got to spend time around the thanksgiving table chatting about the new baby and spending some good time with Uncle Billy and Polly’s new little one.  Blue, their little girl, is the cutest.

They were also gracious enough to share some of their “newborn trade secrets.”  For example, they have this killer black and white flourish pack-n-play we may have to get and a tough-to-find simple bouncer (most bouncers today are quite intense).

I’ll have to see if I can get some photos up.  Stay tuned.

Ultrasound Baby Pictures of Kid #1 (Girl)

Hello All!  We FINALLY got ultrasound pics from Ylia of our brand new baby girl!  It took him about a week to get the pics off of his laptop contraption.  We have quite a few, so I’ve weeded them down a bit and have included only the Top 3. Here we go…

Picture #1 – The Full Body Shot

In this picture you can see her spine and her full noggin.  It’s pretty cool to think she’s got a spine!

Picture #3 – Alien Noggin

This is just her head.  It’s a little scary, but I thought it would be good to share, just to make sure everyone knows that she has well-developed skull.  Go Kid Numero Uno!
